Marta Kurtesz

Marta was born in Hungary. She came to Australia as a refugee at the age of 19 after her boyfriend Bela Szollos was killed in the Budapest student riots. She began training as a nurse in Sydney and worked in several large city hospitals before her love of the outdoors and horses inspired her to move out of the city.

She came to Wandin Valley to work with old Dr. Clark and his younger partner, Dr. Terence Elliott. As the Matron of the Wandin Valley Hospital, she found the pressures and frustrations of dealing with supply shortages and politics overwhelming at times and found relief in riding her horse, the General. She had a brief relationship with paraplegic Lachie Wilson which ended when the newly confident Lachie returned to his former girlfriend and an ill-fated affair with Ben Precott, the alcoholic manager of the local pony club. Later on, she and Terence finally got together and were engaged when she got a strange letter from Sydney. It was from Bela. He hadn't died in the riots after all and had flown into Australia illegally to take her back with him. She left with him in April 1983.
